OpenAI Achieves a Perfect Score at ICPC 🏆

OpenAI’s latest reasoning system just accomplished what no human has: a perfect 12/12 score at the 2025 ICPC World Finals, the most prestigious collegiate programming competition.

• Format: 5 hours, 12 brutally hard algorithm problems.

• Performance: First-attempt success on 11 problems; needed nine tries for the hardest.

• Comparison: The best human team managed 11/12.

OpenAI didn’t train a special model—it used an ensemble of GPT-5 and an experimental reasoning model. Even experts like Scott Wu, CEO of Cognition and a former math prodigy, called the feat “insane.”

Mark Chen of OpenAI noted that this follows their gold medal at the IMO and 6th place at IOI. The core intelligence is there; now it’s about scaffolding better tools around it.

🧠 Takeaway: Coding competitions may soon become benchmarks for AI, not humans. Expect universities to start training students less for winning medals and more for working alongside AI.
