Master the ChatGPT Browser (Your AI Can Now Drive the Web For You)

Most people know ChatGPT's desktop app has a built-in browser. Almost nobody is using it right. Here's how to actually put it to work.

  1. Open the browser panel and import your history. Click the icon in the top right to expand it, then bring in your cookies and saved passwords from Chrome so it's not starting cold.

  2. Set your permissions before anything else. Under Settings, Browser, decide whether ChatGPT can open sites and read your history on its own, or has to ask first. You can also whitelist specific sites like Facebook to skip the constant approval prompts.

  3. Hand it a real task, not just a summary. Ask it to browse and summarize an article, sure, but the bigger unlock is delegation: "start my annual state filing" or "return this drill to Home Depot" while you work on something else entirely.

  4. Let it open and compare multiple tabs. Ask it to pull up four or five product options as separate tabs, then have it build a comparison table from what's actually open in your browser.

  5. Combine browser use with plugins for full context. If you have a Notion page open in the browser, you don't need to name the page or the plugin anymore; it already sees what's on screen and edits it directly.

Trump's $5B AI Science Bet Has a Timing Problem

The Trump administration wants AI to power a new "golden age of science." At the center of it is a $5 billion initiative called the Genesis Mission, and this week the administration's chief science and technology adviser, Michael Kratsios, walked Congress through why.

Here's what's actually in it:

  • The Department of Energy will link its national lab supercomputers, datasets, and scientific facilities into a single AI research platform for the entire federal government

  • Priority areas include biotech, nuclear fusion, quantum computing, and semiconductors

  • DOE has already put real money behind it: over $320 million across four initiatives, including an "American Science Cloud" to host and distribute AI models and scientific data

  • Kratsios explicitly compared the effort to Vannevar Bush's post-WWII "Endless Frontier" report, the document that built the modern American research system

Here's the asterisk. Kratsios framed this as a revival of Bush's vision. But historian Patrick McCray at UC Santa Barbara points out a structural gap between the two. Bush's golden age was expansive: it built new institutions and flooded university research with funding.

This one is narrower, funneled through a single AI platform, and it's landing in the middle of an administration that has terminated thousands of research grants and pushed for cuts to science agency budgets.

Yale synthetic biologist Farren Isaacs is a case in point. He was told in January, with no warning, that a federal grant he was renewing simply wasn't going forward. Weeks later, the same administration is testifying to Congress about a golden age of AI-powered discovery.

Both things are true at once, and that's the tension nobody in the hearing room addressed directly.

🔮 Prediction: The Genesis Mission won't function as broad-based funding for scientists. It will function as a plumbing layer. Expect the real winners to be compute and infrastructure providers (think Nvidia, Cerebras, and the national labs themselves) who get plugged directly into the DOE's new AI platform, not individual researchers applying for grants the old-fashioned way. The administration's own "Science: A New Golden Age" report leans into this by proposing "X-labs" that chase one hard problem and dissolve, plus "golden ticket" reviewers who can fund a single unconventional idea a panel would've killed. That's a bet on concentrated, fast-moving bets over broad distributed funding, which is the opposite of what built the postwar research boom Kratsios is invoking.

Watch for a widening gap between headline numbers like $5 billion and $200 billion, and what actually reaches working scientists like Isaacs. If grant terminations keep outpacing Genesis Mission disbursements, the "golden age" framing becomes a much harder sell in the next round of congressional hearings, and I'd expect Democratic lawmakers to start using exactly that contrast as their opening line.

Doctors vs. the Diagnosis

The AMA Just Told JAMA: Not So Fast

A new AMA framework, provided first to Axios, insists physicians stay central to patient care as AI tools get better and better. It landed days after a JAMA opinion piece argued the opposite: that AI is already good enough to make "human in the loop" a liability, not a safeguard.

The two sides, laid out plainly:

  • The AMA's framework, built with the Digital Medicine Society, argues that while individual tasks evolve, the physician's core responsibilities (human connection, clinical judgment, stewarding responsible tech use) stay "remarkably stable"

  • AMA CEO John Whyte didn't mince words to Axios: "Do you really want to go to the ER and be treated by an LLM if you have chest pain? I don't think so."

  • The JAMA piece, co-authored by former White House health policy adviser Zeke Emanuel, claims generative AI already "rivals or outperforms" doctors at five cognitive tasks: gathering patient info, making diagnoses, selecting tests, prescribing treatment, and managing chronic disease

  • Its authors go further, warning that keeping humans in the loop could make things worse, and that "physicians' skills are threatened by AI-induced deskilling" as they lean on AI more

Here's the uncomfortable part. Whyte's counterargument isn't really about accuracy. It's about definition. "Is simply performing a diagnostic test the practice of medicine? I don't think it is," he told Axios. That's a semantic hedge, and both sides seem to know it. Meanwhile, the actual regulatory groundwork nobody's arguing about is barely there. The FDA only this week put out a discussion paper on how to even assess generative AI medical devices.

Nobody has settled who's liable when an AI gets it wrong, or how insurers reimburse AI-provided care. And in Utah, autonomous AI drug prescriptions are already rolling out live, ahead of any of these guardrails.

🔮 Prediction: This turns into a reimbursement and liability fight over the next 12 to 24 months, not a capability fight. The AMA's framework reads less like a scientific position and more like a defensive claim staked on the fact that today's entire billing infrastructure, CPT codes, malpractice insurance, hospital credentialing, is built around a physician's signature.

If AI genuinely rivals doctors on five core cognitive tasks, payers have a massive financial incentive to test AI-first pathways, especially in places with thin physician supply like rural ERs, urgent care, and telehealth. Utah's autonomous prescribing pilot becomes the test case everyone points to, for better or worse.

Expect state medical boards and malpractice insurers to start writing rules faster than Congress does, which means the rules will diverge wildly state to state before anything national gets settled. The FDA's new discussion paper is the document to watch: whether they choose to regulate generative AI devices like a piece of hardware or like a licensed clinician sets the liability default for the next decade of AI in medicine.
